What to wear when pregnant and breastfeeding in Hong Kong.

What to wear when pregnant and breastfeeding in Hong Kong.

Hey Ladies,

As some of you may know, we have just welcomed our second child - George into the World! I have been pregnant through the hottest, sweatiest and most uncomfortable time of the year here in Honkers - July to September. Getting dressed some days, even for me (who loves getting dressed) has been a bit of a chore. However I wanted to share with you the styles that I have worn/ would recommend for this time.

Now I'm home from the hospital, the feed/sleep repeat phase of the newborn bubble begins. George is feeding really well, and I am settling into life as a new Mumma. Yes there is lack of sleep, but yes it is also worth it (#showmethecoffee).

In terms of what I've been wearing, comfort has been key.

I'd like to share with you some clothes I feel are perfect for this time, and for pregnancy and breastfeeding (should anyone need a bit of advice on what to wear) to be as comfortable as possible, and maintain your style!

Pregnancy..

When it's early days and there is a mini bump - The Maxi Dress

Easy breezy, and with enough space for the future growth, the maxi dress is a great option. Look for styles with a slight A Line, and a drawstring/ seamline under the bust to add a bit of shape.

For the Second Trimester when the bump is on display, you're feeling gooooood, and you have an event to go to! What I did in this one is I sized up to a Large, i'm usually a S (to incorporate the bump) - as this dress has no stretch, but a shirred back detail to add comfort to the bust area.

For the third trimester

Soft, loose, comfy, and relaxed styles are all key at this time. I wore the gypsy midi dress from The Poetic Gypsy a lot. It was my Go To... Bras were uncomfortable so the shirred bust was soft against my skin. The midi length is Mum friendly and super flattering, and an added bonus is it doubles up as a skirt (just tuck the straps in).

The Hospital..

Now at the hospital I wore my PJ's 99.9% of the time, but for the 1% of the time that you have visitors or you want to go for a walk, I can HIGHLY recommend the Lounge Set from The Lullaby Club. The shirt style top is perfect for the early breastfeeding in the hospital, it's a breathable fabric to keep you cool (as we all know the post partum sweats!) and the shorts have a comfy elasticated waist (I had a C Section and they were super comfy sat just below my scar). I sized up to a M/L in the Lilac for my hospital stay.

Breastfeeding and beyond...

Now breastfeeding clothing can be a challenge. Your boobs are leaky, you need easy access and plenty of room so you're comfortable. Especially in the hot weather. It can be quite stressful being out and about in the early days and not be wearing the right clothing.

Every nursing and pregnant Mumma needs the Avalon Smock Dress in their life. Not only does it look super cool (with trainers, or with sandals), it's pregnancy friendly and nursing friendly. It has a functional placket down the front, and pockets to stash your tissues, breast pads, and even snacks (Mumma needs a stash of snacks!).

We have it in numerous prints and colours. Check on the website for current availability and we have new stock coming in October. Here are some pics of how I styled it when I was pregnant, and I've been wearing it since I got home from the hospital as well.

On a side note, I buy all my maternity bras from Bonds Online in Australia. They have easy access clips, and are in cotton, so breathable for the humid weather in Hong Kong. The deliver to Hong Kong, so it's nice and easy to order from them.

For my pregnancy photos I wore the Avalon Smock in Blue Gingham.

A shirt can be an absolute life saver once you're back into your shorts or skirts. Pick a fabric like linen cotton, to stay cool when the weather is warm, with a longer sleeve The Lullaby Club Poppy Blouse is perfect for when the weather cools down as well. There are ties at the front for easy access, and it's a loose fit for comfort and breathability.

I hope this helps you when you are living through this challenging time for styling yourself. Always remember comfort is key, and you can jazz up whatever you wear with some gorgeous accessories.
